Morocco April 2012 - Any one going on this trip and getting excited and starting to make final plans? This will be my second trip with Barrie and for what it is worth some may benefit from the mistakes I made first time round!

Took a good compressor for airing up...but forgot a deflator for airing down!

If in doubt leave it out...took way too much clothing last time.

Listen to Barrie when he tells you your adjustable tow hitch will be a plough...it was! taken off for this trip and high level recovery point in its place!

No fridge...big mistake, warm water and warm beer....fridge sorted for this trip!

Anyone wanting more hints and tips from overland gurus Land Rover World Feb 2012 Expedition preparation special issue is a good read.

I'm taking my Defender 110 utility tdci and keen to hear from any others going on the Morocco trip to share in the pre trip build up prep plans.

All the best, hope to hear from others Morocco bound and look forward to meeting you all in April, Charles

    Hi

We also have a 110 mostly kitted out now ...but no fridge..! has been a 'do we don't we' dilemma for a while!
Vehicle going for service next week, also getting spares on sale or return from garage which is really useful.
Steve is on Dartmoor this weekend but when back Im sure he will want to discuss pre trip plans etc .
Im excited about the CB radio !! thats the extent of my technical know how!

Hope to hear from others as well and look forward to meeting everyone soon.
    Best wishes

    Jean & Steve

Look forward to some pre trip banter and very happy to share my limited experience of overland travel in a good old landy
CB great fun and very necessary for inter vehicle coms and the odd bit of banter!
Happy to chill beers for you!

    Hi Jean
Have spoken to my garage about a sale or return spare parts kit for the trip and they are more than happy to oblige...thanks for the tip

2). Do we need any cooking equipment? I am thinking of making tea, etc.
Don't need cooking equipment, but bring own kit if you fancy a brew during stops.

3). Whilst I realise we will be on the same ferries from/to Portsmouth, I guess we will probably follow each other unless people are visiting other things on route. What would you normally do on the way down to Southern Spain, as there are Saturday and Sundays nights before we meet on the Monday afternoon. I assume it is a straight drive back on the Monday 16th April, and a stay at a campsite near the port before the ferry back on the morning of the 17th? Any recommendations?
Here's (provisionally) what I plan; all welcome to join, must be self-sufficient incl mechanics and navigation to San Roque and back, as not always possible to stay together over 1,000km. Ferry schedules were revised after tour dates, wrecking havoc with my timings, but:
Off ferry at Santander on Sat morning and steady drive until mid-late afternoon. Campsite, picnic area or truck-stop depending on location.
Easy start next day, get to campsite around lunchtime. Note it's the Sun not Mon afternoon.
We sail from Bilbao mid-morning the day after the tour, which finishes with us back in Spain around midday. There's a solid 12 hours driving to get back north, half of it through the night. Cars will have worked hard, this is harder still. Make sure air-filter is clean and tyres are hard.
I'll likely swing into a truck-stop, to reach port for 9.30 next morning. Sailing is at 10.30

4). Money. How much do you think we need to take? Difficult to answer, as of course it depends on what we buy! But would be good to help on budgeting.
Card(s) are better, plenty of ATM's in towns. I'll advise as we go. Budget? Who knows, Charles can you help?

  • Barrie(Monday, January 16 12 02:32 pm GMT)

I should just qualify the reason I don't know the budget - mine's around £5,000 whereas yours should be around £500, or thereabouts?

  • Charles(Monday, January 16 12 09:25 pm GMT)

Cooking equipment - I took a small cannister stove and a kettle and bits for making tea and coffee and never used it, so not taking it this time but others may want flexibility of tea coffee anytime anywhere.

Money - I took out £350 pounds worth of Moroccan wedge in Tetouan as did my co driver and we both had cash left over at the end of the trip. Only need cash for fuel and water and spending money is up to the indvidual. Only time I really spent any money was in Marrakech on ice creams and on some prezzies for the family....barter hard as they all have 'I saw you coming' over their stalls. I think £500 is a good estimate.

    Hi All
Can't live without my PG tips and choc digestives early Am - so taking MSR stove will try not to blow up Milly the Landy!
Good to hear sale or return sorted. Thanks for tips re money. I've been to Marrakesh and haggled over mint tea in the Souk also got lost- very easy but all part of the fun.
Travelling in convoy from Portsmouth sounds like the business - will be very impressive. I reckon the adventure starts on the ferry, although might go stir crazy initially. I suspect a few beers / gins will be medicinal.
Do you reckon an awning would be useful at that time of year ?? What sort of high temps would be expected ? Also I'd quite like Barrie's budget please!!(note to Steve)

Looking forward to meeting you all at the end of March for our trip to Morocco. Hopefully will not be as snowy as it is outside today!

  • Charles(Sunday, February 05 12 09:42 pm GMT)

Hi Mark - Hope you were able to to enjoy the snow today in your off-roader. What are you driving to Morocco?
We too had lots of snow and my kids had a great time being towed on a sledge behind my Landy (Not many hills in Suffolk!) Dad had fun too!
Jean I hope Steve had defrosted in time to get out and enjoy the snow again!
6 weeks or so to D Day, time for pre-trip vehicle inspection and service - looking forward to meeting you all soon.
